What are contextual ads?

Contextual ads are served to the user when they express relevant intent in their interactions with AI. This means ads are shown based on the user’s current interaction with AI, rather than relying solely on their previous browsing history.

Contextual ads work because they’re directly relevant to what users are thinking about right now. Unlike traditional ads that rely on past browsing history, contextual ads respond to the user’s current intent and timing. This makes them feel helpful rather than intrusive, resulting in 8× higher conversion rates compared to traditional display advertising.

Contextual ads don’t need to appear only in-chat. These hypertargeted ads can occupy both traditional and newly available ad spots.

Here are some examples:

  • Banner ad that is based on the current page
  • Conversational ad that is served as part of AI chat messages
  • In-chat ads which are explicit widget ads served in AI chat
  • Text content ads which are native to an article or block of text
